The Commodores meeting has changed locations and will now be held at the Worst cottage on the lower level, Bayside. ( three doors east of the EYC…right at the start of the parade route.)

Weekend of July 9th Announcements

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for a fabulous sold out opening bbq!!!! Unfortunately with zero wind on Sunday the races couldn’t take place and we are now after one week 2 races behind……..

We are also behind in announcements, and there are a few;

1. Please see Gen Huffman this weekend regarding your 2011 registration if you have not already completed that process. (519-676-4477)

2. The Keg Challenge will take place on the water at 2PM Saturday come high water, or higher water. This year our race official Chris “ I think that was an infraction” Dutton will be keeping a close eye on participants in the Euchre Battle of Rondeau. Team Red Captain Doug “Queen of Hearts” Kerr, and Team black captain Tim “Turn a kayak, lose for an hour” Bresnahan will be dealing playing cards to participants in what will be known as the most confusing race to take place since last year’s Keg Challenge!!!!

3. At 5PM Saturday there will be a chilli cook-off with numerous types off volunteer made chilli. Unidentifiable, and only rated by the producer on a heat level scale, the diners will vote for the favourite chilli!!!! WE STILL REQUIRE MORE CHILLI CHEFS….PLEASE LET US NOW IF YOU CAN HELP OUT!!!!!

4. At 6:30 Saturday a euchre tournament will take place with prizes going to the top 4 players. (Partners are not required)…you will be able to buy in up until the fourth game as the scores of your worst 3 results will be dropped. (so people joining after 3 games will use all of their scores).

PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF THESE EVENTS REQUIRE LITTLE SKILL, LITTLE SUPERVISION, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NO ONE WAS HURT DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS E-MAIL!!

THESE THREE EVENTS ARE COMPLETELY SEPERATE (CHILLI $5.00, EUCHRE $10.00) . PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ATTEND SOME OR ALL OF THE EVENTS.

SEE YOU SATURDAY!!!!!

 2011 Changes To Jr. Program

This year we are holding a limited enrolment sailing program, during the Ontario Sailing School’s BOOM Access Program at the EYC. This allows both the EYC and the students of BOOM to be part of an inclusive sailing program. This will take place the first week of August following the long weekend, so register early!

Each member of our staff is required to volunteer for at least one Saturday of Jr. Sailing races.   Our goal is for staff to encourage more weekday
sailors to get involved in weekend races.

Speaking of getting involved… we’ve resurrected an EYC trophy to encourage all Jr. Sailing staff to join us for Sunday races.  Any type of boat gets you points so get out there and sail!

Saturday July 2nd…

  • 12:00 Race and Rules / Fleet Captain’s / Barge
  • 12:45 Skippers Meeting
  • 1:30 Shakedown Race
  • 5:30 Opening BBQ

Commodore’s Corner…

Hi everyone, and welcome to the 2011 season!!!

As our season gets under way I would like to point out some wonderful changes that have been made to our club over the past year. Most noticeably the renovation of the kitchen and addition of the new ‘two keg’ capacity fridge. There’s nothing more important than having the extra keg chilled and ready to tap when needed!

On the bay side of the EYC, you’ll discover a freshly poured, brushed concrete pad.  This addition will keep that area level, making it safer for all and more presentable to our guests.  Many thanks to Jason Phair at Phair Concrete for a job well done.

I would also like to thank everyone who turned out for ‘docks in’ on the May long weekend, and to the ladies that helped feed the crew and tidy the kitchen! Unfortunately, shortly after ‘docks in’, the water level rose and the furthest dock sections were submerged.  Many thanks to Ken Marshall
and his ‘Eau’ team for rescuing the docks. On July 1 at 10 AM we would appreciate some muscle at the EYC to help get those sections back in the water.

At the end of this newsletter you’ll find an updated membership form that can be printed and submitted to our Membership Chair, Gen Huffman. With the recent mail strike, and EYC cost saving initiatives we would like to communicate electronically, as much as possible. If you do not have access to a computer, or e-mail please let us know and we will be happy to deliver copies to you. Other options are to partner with someone who has access to a computer and have them print a copy for you.  Gen will have hard copies of membership form available at the Opening BBQ if needed.  All EYC information will be posted in the yacht club or you can find it at www.erieauyachtclub.com.

Speaking of which, if you haven’t had an opportunity to check out our updated website, please take a few moments to browse thru at www.erieauyachtclub.com.  Many thanks to past Commodore, John Graham.  The website is now extremely user friendly, and we look forward to posting pictures and updates as things happen throughout the summer.  We’ve already taken online registration for the Jr. Sailing and Swimming program and have received positive feedback from our users.

The EVENT and VOLUNTEER BOARD, located outside the washroom doors will have this summer’s events posted so volunteers can sign up for particular duties. The EYC has long survived on the shoulders of volunteers, and I would like to thank everyone who has offered to help this summer. Please take a few minutes this weekend to browse thru the EVENT and VOLUNTEER BOARD for summer updates, news and to volunteer for the event of your choice!

From the Office of The Commodore, it brings great sadness to announce the passing of two former Commodores of the EYC during the off season. S T Emans (Commodore 1962), and Peter Gilbert (Commodore 1986). Both families have a longstanding relationship with the EYC, and have developed many friendships along the way. We send our thoughts and prayers to them during this difficult time.

EYC Opening Banquet…Sat July 2, 2011

It seems as though the traditional opening banquet approaches faster and faster every year!! This year is unique in that both the Canadian and American holidays surround our opening celebration to the 2011 season.

This will hopefully bring some members that have been unable to attend this event in years past.
